
Karen has over 15 years experience working in the telecoms and IT arena, with mobile applications software and systems, web development, speech processing and AI software. She has had a variety of technical and management roles in Ericsson, Telstra, the University of Melbourne and Adacel, allowing her to develop and refine skills in project management, technical product management, pre-sales and solution consulting, business development, technical support, and application software design and development.
During her time with Ericsson, Karen successfully managed the delivery of a number of projects, including the Telstra Active (3G) website, the migration of Telstra's 2.5G WAP portal to their new Service Delivery Platform and the installation of an MMS trial system for Phantom Applications (Vodafone/Ericsson joint venture). She was technical product manager for Ericsson's positioning and information services in Australia during 2001. Karen also had intimate involvement with Ericsson's Mobility World, a third party partnering and development program, and managed a number of crucial functions such as: event coordination, technical support and demonstration showcase management.
Other experience includes four years with Telstra Research Laboratories, where Karen designed and developed a number of prototype mobile applications that utilised advanced technologies, such as speech recognition and intelligent agents. She also gained wide knowledge of Telstr's operations from her role as development project leader and a part-time posting to the Mobiles Product Development, Product Marketing area in Telstra for six months.
In more recent years Karen's experience has extended to start-ups including founding her own IT security and support business for the small business market in 2003. In addition Karen has developed and deployed the Australian Toy Hobby & Nursery Fair website (with associated administration tools) and two online surveys for the Australian Toy Association. Karen also spent six months with the online arts listing startup Artabase, performing web development and financial modelling. These have given her exposure to agile software development techniques and Ruby on Rails. In 2005, Karen developed a mobile game commissioned for digital art exhibitions at the Sydney Opera House and the Adelaide Festival of Arts.
In early 2007 Karen began developing Six Figures www.sixfigures.com.au a niche job site that was launched nationally in March 2008. Six Figures is a new premium job site; the first of its kind in Australia.
Karen is passionate about future technology, business innovation and creativity. Her expertise and interest in IT has resulted in Karen being published in various journals, achieving countless academic awards, and developing an impressive breadth of IT knowledge. Coupled with this she brings strong businesses acumen and financial skills with and proven experience in prototyping innovative new services.
Karen holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Bachelor of Science from the University of Melbourne (1993), a Master of Engineering Science (University of Melbourne, 1996), and a Master of Entrepreneurship and Innovation (Australian Graduate School of Entrepreneurship - Swinburne University, 2002). Additionally, she has undertaken a number of technical courses, participated in Telstra's CEO's Leaders Program and received a number of research and student awards.
